Gradual Release Grammar
|
"Ms. Waite taught me a lot about grammar. The grammar homework/notes we got every day really improved my writing skills. So much, my short story was chosen to be published in a real life book."

This is an example of grammar mini-lessons that I have used to start off class. It is based on the gradual release method. The worksheet is projected on the board while the class has theirs in front of them. I define the grammatical rule to start, then walk students through the first block on the page, thinking aloud about which answer I am choosing. When we get to the second block, I ask students in the class to raise their hand and suggest answers. We talk about the answers as they are suggested. When we get to the third block, students have a few minutes to complete it on their own. We immediately go over the correct answers and I answer any questions anyone might have. As students are working, I walk around to help if needed.
The back side of the worksheet is always homework (unless students finish early and have downtime in class). I include more detailed directions on the grammatical rule on the back so students have a guide if they need reminding at home. I have over twenty of these worksheets that I have made and use to help reinforce grammar standards. (This lesson was completed at the beginning of a block schedule class, an hour and a half.) You will find the worksheet for this lesson below. (There is no specific lesson plan for this as it gets used at the beginning of a lesson) |
